SEO, Search Engine Optimisation, is one of those things my customers want so badly they will pay most of their budget for it. And the quickest way I can alienate a customer is to tell them to save their money for good content. So I'll just post other qualified authors posts about it and let folks vent at them. Here is a post I would write but this author beat me to it:

The bottom line:

There are endless complex theories on just how a site ranks highly on search engines. Some of those theories have no basis at all. The truth is, nobody except little robots at Google knows just how a site ranks higher than another. What we do know is that 1) the content of a page, and how it is coded, and 2) the authority of other pages that link to a page – especially for the topic in question – are the most powerful dictators of how well a page ranks on search engines.

Spend your money on good content, photos, meaning for your topic, then tell the world you are there and the SEO will follow on it's own.

Splashup (beta) Image Editor

Splashup is a pretty obvious adaptation of the popular open source program, GIMP, as a WebWare application. I’m am very impressed by how well it has been done too.

Let me add here that GIMP offers much more capability than Splashup does, Scriptfu addons and filters that make it an open source competitor of the commercial Photoshop program. (Though not fully, if you have the cash, Photoshop and Fireworks are still worth the cash.)

Still, this webware has some features that make it a great addition to your image editing abilities from any computer web browser with flash.

To begin with it will load files from your local hard disk or a number of online repositories, Flickr, Picasa and Facebook. In addition if you are needing to edit over several sessions of use you can save it to a splashup format which keeps all the layers, etc. that you have used during editing.

In short, give it a go. I think you’ll be pleased.

Offline Blog Editing Tools

If you are not already keeping a Blog of your own you may be finding you are soon to be a minority. It has become so easy to create one now the complex part is actually writing in it, and this article is about new ways to create or edit Blogs from other programs, offline so to speak. The first I'll describe is one I am trial-ing to make this part of this post. It's a freebie from Microsoft called Windows Live Writer .

I am trying to demonstrate how it will handle images very nicely, it even adds the show effect on the graphic you see.

Because it is a Microsoft product it handles inserting info from all the Microsoft services (which I am not a big fan, MS maps, video sites instead of YouTube and Flickr and Google Maps).

For a Windows product, it's not bad.

I just Stumbled Upon this new (to me at least) online graphic editor and it is pretty neat. I've been expecting services like this now as the web 2.0 design of weblife comes into being. this service is still Beta but that means it's advanced features are available free for now.

This site will do all the basic image editing like any editor on your computer but it does more and it does it within a browser window. to make it easier you can also open it's editor to "Full Screen" so it looks like any program you have on your computer, but its a web page.

It integrates with your hard drive, Flickr, Picasa, and Facebook images at this time and looks like to intends to work with many more services as time goes on.

Try it out, it's a five of five rating from me.

Internet Speedtesting

More and more of us are using broadband Internet connections and it makes sense to see if you are getting what you are paying for. There are lots of sites that have simple download speed tests but I'm suggesting this one at speedtest.net and keep a history of your service.

Update:

The value of Internet speed to our nation's future is not being recognized. The USA is (now) number 16 in the world for population having broadband Internet. The importance of this has been completely ignored by our leadership and will have long lasting effects in our position in the world.

I've written about Mozy.com and it's backup software for XP and above, but here is another service that is offering even more though in a different type of package. This service will let you keep up to 25 GIGs of files online with them for free and has more space for minimal fees.

This service is designed to store your photos, music, backup files or any other files and will keep them safe or share them as you wish. I haven't found yet if it will work with Win2000 or earlier but there is a web interface you can use and it should work with anything. A Keeper!

If you've read anything at all about Content Management Systems (CMS), you'll probably know at least three things: CMS are the most exciting way to do business, CMS can be really, I mean really, complicated and lastly Portals are absolutely, outrageously, often unaffordably expensive.

It's licensed under the GNU/GPL license, easy to install and administer and reliable.
